A sweeping collection of poetry from one of Great Britain’s most celebrated postwar writers.

Bestselling British novelist Alan Sillitoe delves into the profound and personal world of poetry in this collection of two hundred poems written between 1950 and 1990. Новая книга Павла Нерлера — реконструкция последних полутора лет жизни О. Э. Мандельштама: от возвращения в середине мая 1937 года из воронежской ссылки в Москву (точнее, в стокилометровую зону вокруг нее) и до смерти поэта в пересыльном лагере под Владивостоком 27 декабря 1938 года. Но и в лагере поэт был не один, а в массе других заключенных, или, как он сам выразился, «с гурьбой и гуртом». Автор собрал по крупицам сведения и о тех, кто окружал поэта в эшелоне и в лагере, и кто являл собой тот своеобразный гулаговский социум, в котором протекли последние недели жизни поэта. В разделе «Мифотворцы и мистификаторы» собраны различные отголоски лагерной жизни и смерти поэта, звучащие в прозе Варлама Шаламова, стихах Юрия Домбровского, песне про товарища Сталина и др., а в разделе «Следопыты» показана история поиска Надеждой Мандельштам и другими энтузиастами сведений о тюремно-лагерном — завершающем — этапе жизни Осипа Мандельштама. Первые стихотворные публикации Мандельштама появились в 1907 г. в журнале Тенишевского коммерческого училища "Пробужденная мысль", но подлинный литературный дебют состоялся в августе 1910 г. в девятом номере журнала "Аполлон", где была напечатана подборка из пяти стихотворений.

При жизни Мандельштама вышло шесть его поэтических книг: три издания "Камня" (1913, 1916 и 1923), "Tristia" (1922), "Вторая книга" (1923) и "Стихотворения" (1928). В 1931 - 1932 гг. поэт заключил договоры на сборники "Избранное" и "Новые стихи", а также на двухтомное собрание сочинений, но эти издания не состоялись.

Первое в СССР посмертное издание стихов Мандельштама было анонсировано в 1958, но вышло только в 1973 г.- Мандельштам О. Стихотворения (Библиотека поэта. Большая серия). Л., Советский писатель, 1973 (переизд. в 1974, 1978 и 1979 гг.). О намерении издать двухтомник О. Мандельштама в "Художественной литературе" свидетельствует копия письма председателя Комиссии по литературному наследию О. Э. Мандельштама К. М. Симонова директору изд-ва А. Косолапову от 5 июня 1968 г. (архив И. М. Семенко). Издание не состоялось.

В настоящем издании впервые в СССР предпринята попытка собрать в одной книге все поэтическое наследие Мандельштама, включая стихи для детей и шуточные стихи. В Приложениях собраны разные редакции и наброски, а также экспромты, отрывки или строки из уничтоженных или утерянных стихов. Принципы композиции и текстологии, принятые в издании, раскрываются в преамбулах к комментариям к каждому разделу, все исключения оговариваются. Особенности авторской орфографии максимально сохранены. В отношении пунктуации применен дифференцированный подход, позволяющий сочетать адекватность передачи смысла с современными нормами правописания и явными особенностями авторской пунктуации (Мандельштам, как известно, пренебрегал знаками препинания и правилами их расстановки, исходя исключительно из мелодики стиха, нередко он диктовал свои стихи жене или другим лицам, не вмешиваясь в пунктуацию при авторизации текстов). Нумерация строф, часто встречающаяся в автографах и прижизненных публикациях Мандельштама, не приводится.

Под стихотворениями проставлены даты написания, через запятую - даты их авторской переработки. Косвенные датировки даются в угловых скобках, предположительные - со знаком вопроса в круглых скобках. Переводы иностранных слов в текстах даются под строкой (исключения отмечены в комментариях). Текст, зачеркнутый автором, дается в квадратных скобках, а неавторский текст - в угловых.
