Claimed By Shadow is the follow up to Karen Chance’s exciting debut novel Touch The Dark. The story in Claimed By Shadow follows on straight from where Touch The Dark left off and although the author does a good job of filling in the back story during the first couple of chapters, because the story is somewhat complex I would recommend that readers unfamiliar with this series start by reading Touch The Dark first – rather than jumping straight in with Claimed By Shadow. (Touch The Dark is an excellent read – I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed!)

Claimed By Shadow starts about a week after where Touch The Dark finished, with Cassie still in Las Vegas and still trying to find a way to extract herself from her many problems, before someone kills her and solves all her problems for her. There is no shortage of would-be assassins. Tony, the Mafioso vampire that she turned into the Feds is still gunning for her – even though he is in hiding. The Vampire Senate want Cassie to be their tame Pythia; if she won’t do their bidding they will have no qualms about eliminating her. The Circle (the ruling council of good magic users) wants her out of the way so that someone of their own choice can inherit the Pythia’s power – and that’s just for starters!

Myra, the previous heir to the power of the Pythia will stop at nothing to eliminate Cassie so she can claim the title of Pythia back for herself. The problem with time travel in any novel is that the mixed up timelines can soon become confusing, Claimed By Shadow suffers a bit with this and when you add a trip to Faerie into the mix it’s enough to make any brain go into information overload (well, it did mine anyway!) There is a huge amount of information to take in, plus several twists and turns in the storyline, so the reader has to pay attention or risk losing the plot.

Luckily there is plenty to hold the readers attention. The action that starts in the second chapter doesn’t let up until the last page of the book as Cassie and her small band of allies fight their way from present day Las Vegas, through Victorian London into the Faerie kingdom and back again. The characters are multi-faceted and engaging, you just can’t help but like Pritkin the war mage and even his golem seems endearing.

The vampires in Claimed By Shadow are by turns super-sexy and super-scary and Cassie’s ambivalence towards them strikes just the right note in the face of their highly suspect morals and motivations.

Claimed By Shadow is an original, richly imagined tale and a solid follow-up to Touch The Dark, making this novel a must for urban fantasy fans.

MATTHEW PEARL'S second novel is based on what he calls "one of literary history's most persistent gaps." Edgar Allan Poe died, Pearl tells us, "at the age of 40 in a Baltimore hospital on Oct. 7, 1849, four days after being found in distress at Ryan's inn and tavern." Pearl takes us back to those few lost days through the inquiries of Quentin Clark, a Poe-mad young Baltimorean who is dismayed not just by the writer's death but by the press's apathetic reponse to the news. Clark takes it upon himself to look into matters and rectify this slight to his hero. The trouble is, Clark is a stock character from the world of commercial thrillers: a man with a lot to lose, imperiled by his own obsession. Engaged to a beautiful young woman, the son of wealthy and very proper parents and pursuing a career as a lawyer, he may sacrifice them all to his devotion to Poe.

Clark haunts the writer's grave, visits the hospital where he lay dying and tracks down the Poe cousins. But wherever he turns, he's met with indifference or outright obstruction. Finally, in desperation, he turns to another source of information: the pages of a book. Clark has always admired Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue" and the other mysteries featuring C. Auguste Dupin, the brilliant Frenchman who solves crimes too baffling for the Paris police. "Dupin's reasoning followed a method Poe called ratiocination," Clark reminds himself, "employing one's imagination to achieve analysis, and one's analysis to climb the heights of imagination."

When Clark stumbles on a newspaper item suggesting that Dupin was based on a real Frenchman, he promptly takes off for the Continent. Of course, there turns out to be more than one candidate for this honor, and soon a couple of testy Frenchmen are racing back to America, eager to snatch whatever glory they might from Poe's death.

Baroquely orchestrated complications ensue, up to and including a threat to the future of the French republic. As he demonstrated in his serial-killers-and-philosophers best seller, "The Dante Club," Pearl is a fine scene-setter and a resolute, if not always inspired, plotter. "The Poe Shadow" is thick with intrigue and thicker still with carefully researched (and ostentatiously displayed) details.

Pearl, who taught literature at Harvard before embarking on his literary career, sometimes displays a wonderfully knowing tone, and enjoys playing with 19th-century lingo. When a Baltimore police officer asks Clark if he has a wife and is told that he has a fiancée, the officer warns: "You should have much to occupy yourself without needing to think of this unhappy affair, then. Or your sweetheart might give you the mitten." Sadly, Pearl's plot is not all sweethearts and mittens.

With its bewildered narrator and its attempt to marry the rational and the spooky, "The Poe Shadow" seems to be modeled on Poe's own writing, but it's missing a crucial element: brevity. Although Pearl has a real affinity for 19th-century America, he overwhelms the strengths of his book with a hurricane of ersatz Victorian prose. He doesn't just disinter Poe's story; he disinters the language of Poe's time. After a while, you feel like you're trapped in a sepia-toned faux-daguerrotype. Pearl has created a museum rather than a world. And no one lives in a museum.

Алексей Фёдорович Греков известен своими трудами сразу в трех научных направлениях – полиграфии, гальванопластике и дагеротипии. Выходец из семьи мелкопоместных дворян, он получил образование во Втором кадетском корпусе в Петербурге. Однако на военном поприще прослужил недолго, уволился по собственному желанию и перевелся на гражданские должности – сначала служил в Костромской губернии, а затем в Москве, в университетской типографии: Алексей Фёдорович был помощником издателя «Московских ведомостей». То были его золотые годы, когда, помимо типографской работы, удавалось проводить опыты по гальванопластике, организовать дагеротипную студию и экспериментировать с производством камер, съемкой портретов, – его считают автором первого фотоаппарата, сделанного в России (тогда их называли дагеротипными «снарядами»), и первым, кто создал в нашей стране полноценное дагеротипное ателье. Греков был прежде всего деятельным практиком, который откликался на громкие открытия своего времени и искал пути развития и усовершенствования новых технологий, однако оставил после себя и теоретические труды: несколько книг и журнальных статей.

О нем долгое время ничего не писали, словно полностью позабыв, – скорее всего, из-за драматического финала жизни. И только с середины XX века историки фотографии и полиграфического производства начали регулярно упоминать имя Алексея Фёдоровича в специализированных статьях и книгах, отдавая дань уважения деятельности этого азартного до экспериментов человека. Как правило, это были очень краткие заметки, что во многом закономерно: биографических сведений о нем сохранилось совсем немного. Человеческая трагедия вообще имеет такое свойство: взгляд художника выделяет одних героев, высветляет их поступки и мысли, в то время как не менее интересные персонажи остаются в тени. Это как посмотреть, как поставить свет в театре. Сигарев переменил угол зрения.

«Петр Великий и царевич Алексей» — сочинение, написанное известным русским историком Дмитрием Ивановичем Иловайским (1832–1920).

Петр Алексеевич, узнав о бунте стрельцов, немедленно поспешил в Москву, чтобы начать дознание. Усвоив некоторые приемы иноземного обращения, он собственноручно принялся изменять внешний вид бояр, избавляя их от бород, дабы они соответствовали моде, заведенной на Западе. Именно тѣ мѣста этого романа, гдѣ авторъ желаетъ разогрѣть себя религіозными порываніями своего героя въ міръ надздѣшній, меньше всего увлекаютъ читателя…»
